Christians and Marriage Licenses

A while ago I wrote a blog post that posited that it was sinful for a Christian couple to decline to deliberately include God and His will into the fabric of their marriage.

In the responses to an article in World Net Daily, California bans ‘brides,’ ‘grooms’, about the fallout of a California Supreme Court decision wherein the Court made a law(!) that overturned the will of the people by legalizing sodomite marriage.

The story is about a couple being denied a marriage license under the new law because they wanted to be Bride and Groom instead of Party A and Party B.  Among the Digg comments about the story are two links that give information I wish that I had known many years ago.  They point out that the government has no legitimate role in a God ordained marriage; only in one that excludes God.  Here are the two links:

Christian, Vote in Faith, Not in Fear

Voting for Obama is to vote for the destruction of America as we know it.  The America given to us by our Founding Creationists is long gone.  Christian, I implore you, Don’t vote out of fear.  Fear is Satan’s weapon.  To quote a preacher from the past, “It is never right to do wrong and it is never wrong to do right.”

If you think that a vote for a third party is a vote for Obama, then you should not do it.  I don’t think that how either you or I as individuals vote is going to turn the election one way or the other.  The issue is what our decision making process about this and many other issues says about our trust and reliance on God.  In the final analysis, He is the One Who will decide the election.  He has had His hand on America.  He still has His Almighty hand on America, either for blessing or for judgment.  We know what we deserve.  We know a little of His grace.  We don’t know how His plans for the introduction of His visible empire are going to play out.  Vote in faith, not in fear.  Rest in the confidence not that the best candidate will win, but that God’s will shall be done.

“Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair; the rest is in the hands of God.”  — George Washington

For whom shall we Christians vote?

A sister in Christ wrote to me asking for my insight in America’s next elections.  Here is my reply, modified to make it more understandable to those who don’t know us personally.

I’d still prefer to vote for Alan Keyes, but you have to be able to think to want him in office.  I can only echo your words, “Why in Heaven’s name didn’t the Constitution Party nominate him?”

Christian, Are You Living in Sin?

The usual thought that comes to mind when the phrase “living in sin” is used is that of a couple living together without being married.  For most people who subscribe to the idea, being legally married is enough to avoid this judgment call, although is some churches, being married in and/or with the blessing of that church is necessary.  I’d like to propose that a Christian can be married legally and in the church and still be living in sin.

First, let us define “sin”.  In this context, sin is to fall short of God’s expectations of us.  We have all done this.  Hence, we are all sinners.  To be “living in sin”, therefore, is to continue, over a period of time that includes the present, in a manner of life that God does not want us to live in.  This condition is not a “slip up”, but rather a decision to live a certain way.

Ancient Israel and the U.S.A.

Once upon a time, there was a country, ancient Israel, that had been singularly founded by and blessed by God –

just like America.

Israel sinned against God repeatedly –

just like America.

God had been merciful and forgiving to Israel, over and over again –

just like America.

Religion in Investing

A German man whom I recently got to know sent me a copy of Warren Buffett’s letter to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway in 2007. In this letter he made reference to Adam and Eve. I had already made a religious remark to him, so he asked whether Warren Buffett is also religious. Here is my reply to my new friend.

What is the real issue?

My brother sent me a link to an article that urges us to vote for McCain in order to keep Obama out of the White House. For me, this race is not about winning or losing. It’s not about politics or electing the least of a number of evils. We are electing the person who will direct the policies of the United States of America for at least four of the most critical years in our history.

I believe that the Bible is the Word of God. This Word says “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34) Can those who believe this statement from the Almighty vote for a leader who is admittedly a lesser of evils? Those Christians who vote for McCain are saying with their actions that godliness in government is nice, but not necessary; that the approval of the Almighty is OK, but not essential for the blessing of America.

I do not agree with Mr. Huckabee in several political particulars. But I do agree with every statement that he has made that has any relationship to righteousness or godliness and their places in government. I have voted for the lesser of evils, but in those races there was no one better. This time around there is a righteous, godly man running for President — and it ain’t John McCain.

I can stand unashamed before the Almighty with Huckabee ballot in hand. Can you stand before Him with your McCain ballot? What else matters?

Warning — Spiritual and Computer

I have become aware of a threat to computers that is difficult to explain to most people. As I wrote an email to my personal contacts trying to explain enough so that they might take some preventative action, I realized that there is a spiritual parallel to computer security problems. I am going to describe the spiritual problem first, then the computer security threat. There is something you can do about each.

Understanding God’s Word

We Christians are said to be “people of the book”, that is to say that our faith hinges upon the authority of the written Word of God. While it is true that many Christians base their faith upon what their denomination teaches or their preacher says, behind these two still lies the understanding that the church or preacher is functioning under the authority of God’s Word, the Bible. Of course there are those who, while calling themselves Christians, deprecate the Bible. I’m not addressing these folks or their concerns at all. I’d like to address a concern of those who fear God and want to obey His Word. This concern is how to interpret questionable passages of Scripture.

Finland School Shooting

If you accept the view that we humans are made by our Creator in the image of God, you will regard human life as sacred, something to be valued.  If you accept the evolutionary view that we are the products of blind chance, then there is no reason to assume that human life has any more value than that of a squirrel.
